Kataezome Calendar 1974
Portfolio measuring 11.5" x 15”, original stiff mulberry paper wrappers with a striking pastedown paper label, stamped “Made in Japan” at bottom edge. The portfolio houses twelve vibrant stencil-dyed 11" x 14” sheets—one for each month—on handmade untrimmed mulberry or kozo paper. No indication of artist, but these seem to closely echo the work of Takeshi Nishijima (1929-2003), who along with the somewhat more famous Keisuke Serizawa (1895-1984), were central to the Mingei (Folk Art) movement; both created calendars that appealed to Western audiences. A fine example. Item #53
