Space Exploration: Merit Badge Series

New Brunswick, NJ: Boy Scouts of America, 1966. First Edition. 96 pp. VG+ stapled pictorial wraps—a number of pages contain annotations, underlining, and a few doodles, and laid in on lined paper is a drawing of a rocket. Contents include a history of space exploration and sections including Problems in Space, Space Fitness, Unmanned Spacecraft, and Design Your Own Space Mission.

The merit badge in space exploration was first offered in 1965. Astronauts and NASA’s Educational Programs Division helped plan the requirements and the pamphlet. As NASA administrator James E. Webb notes in the preface, “If your work in earning the badge gives you the inspiration, you may follow with high school and college courses in science and engineering that will prepare you to become an active participant in your country’s space program.”.
