1930s Photo Album: Parker Dam, Mount Rushmore

1930s oblong 14” x 11” stringbound photo album, with decorative patterned green boards and “Photographs” embossed on front cover. 2.5” x 3.5” to 4.75” x 6.75”. 30 black paper leaves, 19 blank, containing 173 corner-mounted photographs on rectos and versos.

The album belonged to one Robert (Bob) Nicholas and his wife Louise; Bob graduated from the University of Colorado in 1933 and was appointed by the government as a junior engineer and photographer on the Parker Dam project in Arizona. The album contains 16 photos of the Parker Dam on the Arizona/California border, under construction. The Dam was built between 1934-1938. Also of note are two photos of the family with Mount Rushmore in the background; Roosevelt’s face is under construction, dating this image to 1938-1939. Other photos are of the (extended) family and their travels throughout the West. A nice collection of images, with notable historical significance. Item #340
