Original Poster for Kenneth Gaburo Event at University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign, November 18, 1967

Original Poster: “Matrix Extra” New Music Choral Ensemble Kenneth Gaburo, Director Saturday, November 18, 1967 8:00 pm, Smith Music Hall no admission charge. 14" x 22”, white heavy stock with black illustrations and lettering. VG+ with discoloration at edges not affecting images. The event was part of the Centennial Symposium at the University of Illinois in November 1967 developed under the direction of John Cage; this event was not included on the original posted schedule.

Gaburo (1926-1993) was a prolific composer of experimental vocal and instrumental works.

John Cage, the avant-garde composer and a founder of the New York School, arrived in 1967 for a three-year appointment as Associate of the Center for Advanced Studies and Visiting Professor of Music, where he created numerous “happenings,” performance art where visitors, performers, objects, and environments interacted. The first happening Cage directed at Illinois (complete with large weather balloons) occurred on this November weekend: Music Circus (otherwise known as Musicircus) at the University of Illinois Stock Pavillion, which began at 8pm and lasted for nearly eight hours.

A scarce poster of an important Gaburo performance. . Item #240
