Malcolm & Martin
Berkeley, CA: Berkeley Unified Schools Black Studies Program, 1972. First Edition. First Printing. [8 pp.]. VG+ in stapled illustrated wraps (light wear, stain to rear wrapper, ownership stamp to bottom of front wrapper). 5.25” x 7.5”.
85-line ballad with the refrain in all caps, “Because You/They Were Here, We Will Never Be The Same.” The poem makes the case that, despite their different upbringings and approaches (“Martin felt integration was the answer / To Americas’ racist trip, / But Malcolm said separate and get off this sinking ship”), they both had the same goals, letting their messages of freedom and equality ring for all those who were oppressed (“Both men were scholars, intellectuals, true and straight / With analytical minds and masters of debate”). The poem discusses their beliefs and their deaths and praises their commitment to the struggle for freedom (“One a Baptist preacher, / The other a Muslim minister, / Stood side by side / Their people against forces of sinister”).
