Color Us Cullud! The American Negro Leadership Official Coloring Book
New York: Black Standard Publishing Company, 1963. First Edition. [28 pp.]. 8.5” x 11” in VG illustrated stapled wraps (shelfwear and soiling, light creasing and spotting).
A “satirical analysis of the present crop of so-called leaders” infused with Black nationalist thinking in the form of a coloring book (Brath studied at Cartoonists & Illustrators School/School of Visual Arts). The title page notes that this book is “an educational document for black people at home and abroad” to “aid in promoting the program of the African Nationalist Pioneer Movement.” In his Preface, Brath rails against integration and stakes out a separatist position, noting that his book is “a sincere critical analysis of twenty of the most publicized individuals, or groups, who are often designated to speak for over twenty million black people, who reside in the United States. When the ‘leadership abilities’ of these present day public figures are closely examined, it is easy to understand why the black masses are confused and frustrated.” Brath skewers such figures as Martin Luther King, Jr., Thurgood Marshall, James Baldwin, Harry Belafonte, Sammy Davis, and Jackie Robinson.
