The Black Revolution: To What Ends?

Brochure for an All-University Conference at the University of Wisconsin February 3-8, 1969. Speakers included Gwendolyn Brooks (“Informal Discussion”), Rev. Jesse Jackson (“The Necessity of Being Militant”), Jonathon Kozol (“White Schools, Black Revolution”), Rev. Andrew Young (“Where Do We Go From Here?”), Hoyt Fuller (editor of Negro Digest on “Black Literature Today”), Sam Allen (professor at Tuskeegee Institute on “The Origins of Negritude”), as well as panels on Literature for a Black Revolution, Violence and Black Pride, a dinner and seminar on Ghetto Organizing and Racial Obligations of the University, readings from Don L. Lee, screenings of Dutchman and Huey, and painting, print, and sculpture exhibitions by black artists.

There were more than 16,000 people in attendance that week, and the conference is often noted as giving momentum to the well-documented Black Student Strike at the University. “The conference helped campus learn about the Black Revolution as a national movement [and] provided opportunities for Black Students to meet Black Leaders.”
