Blackfrica Speakers Bureau 1970-71

New York: Blackfrica Promotions, [1970]. First Edition. [21 pp.]. Near Fine stapled illustrated wrappers.

From the Introduction: “Blackfrica Promotions Inc. is an attempt to rescue Black culture from its centuries old history of exploitation; an attempt to promote the natural development of Black artistic expression…Because Black people don’t control the media that exist, we have created one—The Blackfrica Speakers Bureau…designed to provide a varied selection of articulate Black speakers whose ideas and experiences are accurate reflections of different sectors of today’s Black community.”

The publication provides biographies of 41 speakers and a list of topics that they can speak to in public addresses, lectures, and panel discussions. For instance, you could have Emmitt Bryant of the NBA’s Boston Celtics speak on “Are Black Athletes Exploited?” revolutionary poet Askia Muhammad Toure on “The Spiritual Roots of Black Liberation,” or Peter Bailey, associate editor of Ebony magazine, on “Brother Malcolm X and His Influence on the Movement.” Other speakers listed include National Black Theater actress Andi Ramsay, Columbia University Professor of History Hollis R. Lynch, former SCLC Executive Director Dr. William A. Rutherford, and Hustler Gilbert Paschal.
