Item #757 The Caves of Steel

The Caves of Steel

[1962?] “A J. Horrible Raunch Production. Based on the novel by Isaac Asimov and the Verse by Randall Garrett. Produced by The Chicago Science Fiction League.” Spirit duplicated, 5 pp (8.5” x 11”), VG (wrinkling and light crease to top right corner, edgewear and spotting).

An unpublished five-page script produced by the Chicago Science Fiction League, which had been newly re-formed in 1962 by Rosemary Hickey. We believe this script was produced to coincide with the CHICON III, the 20th World Science Fiction Convention in Chicago in 1962 (with Guest of Honor Theodore Sturgeon). Hickey was the Secretary of Chicon III and under her leadership, the Chicago Science Fiction League sponsored an exhibit of the art of sci-fi illustrator Richard Powers at the event (see http://fancyclopedia.org/Chicago_Science_Fiction_League). However, we find no mention of this script in the Proceedings of Chicon III and thereby conclude that it was not performed on site during the convention. Asimov had been invited but could not attend (the convention proceedings note that Asimov in fact turned down their request)—perhaps this intriguing piece was written in anticipation of his attendance.

A rare piece of Asimov-related fandom, with no mention in OCLC. . Item #757
