1950s-1980s Collection of Santa/Christmas Research and Unpublished Typescripts belonging to Evelyn Cole of W. Englewood, NJ.

An impressive collection (more than 300 individual pieces) containing unpublished manuscript/lectures and research material on Christmas around the world and the history of St. Nicholas. Typed manuscripts include: The Celebration of Christmas (10 pp.); Tree of Light and Life—Our Christmas Tree (7 pp.); A Visit From St. Nicholas (3 pp.); St. Nicholas and the Gift Bearers of the World (9 pp. and 17 pp.); Our Christmas Tree—Tree of Light and Life (9 pp.); Santa Claus and the gift Bearers of the World (4 pp.). Many have Cole’s notations and corrections; presumably these were read at different venues. No record of publication of these typescripts, but the entire collection points to a three decade-long obsession with collecting information about Santa and Christmas. Includes numerous newspaper and magazine clippings on everything from holiday dolls and patterns to the history of Santa Claus and Christmas (includes over a hundred images of Santa), typed letters dated 1952 from the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Museum of the American Indian Heye Foundation to Cole answering her research requests about St. Nicholas, advent calendars, items related to The Night Before Christmas, including a few books, holiday stamps, programs, postcards, cut-outs, and more. An interesting glimpse of one woman’s research, stretching over four decades, related to the Christmas holiday. Item #267
