VG+ black cloth (no dustjacket as issued), gilt lettering and design on front board and spine. Faded spine, with a touch of sunning to top edge. Bookplate of Paul & Agnes Landis on front pastedown (Landis was an English professor at Illinois). The first book by both Laing and Lattimore, who graduated from Dartmouth in 1925 and 1926, respectively. Laing received the Walt Whitman Prize for Poetry in 1929, and Lattimore would go on to win the Bollingen Translation Prize for his translation of Aristophanes’s The Frogs (1962). Lattimore was elected a Fellow of the Academy of American Poets, and his translations of ancient Greek and Latin are often the standard translations used today, particularly of Homer’s The Iliad (1951) and The Odyssey (1969).
