Madison, WI: Beckett Associates, 1969. Photography by Richard Faverty. VG+ in oblong (approximately 8” x 6”) stapled pictorial wrappers. [38 pp]. Owner signature on first page along with stamp “$0.65 7/70.”

“On Friday, February 7, 1969, a number of black students at the University of Wisconsin made public a series of demands and presented them to the University administration. The black students charged that the University was essentially a white institution, that it had not met its commitments to the needs of the black community, that the curriculum was not relevant to those blacks who wanted to work with their own people in the ghetto, and that black athletes were systematically exploited by the athletic program.” The book documents through photographs the demonstrations and police and National Guard response, concluding, “Education: who gets it and what kind…This is the issue that students at Wisconsin, Berkeley, San Francisco State, Duke, and elsewhere are trying to deal with. The structures are often unresponsive…The Channels are proper but endless…The frustration is boundless.”

An eye-opening snapshot of the struggles of black college students and their efforts to promote change during the Civil Rights era. Uncommon in commerce, with twelve holdings in OCLC. Item #652
